Canola Oil
Let’s think about it.
Olive oil comes from olives. Sesame oil comes from sesames. Sunflower oil comes from sunflowers, right? Canola oil comes from the canola plant? What? There is no such plant! Canola oil is a word the Canadians came up with. They took “Canada” and “oil” and put them together. You guessed it. Canola oil is a genetically engineered plant developed in Canada. This oil is derived from the rapeseed plant, which is very toxic to humans and animals due to the erucic acid. They use this (rapeseed oil) for insect repellents. It is highly processed and refined. During this process is it exposed to extremely high heat and pressure, which turns any of the omega 3’s into trans fats. Yep. Trans Fats. The kind you want to run for the hills from! It is marketed as one of the “healthy” oils containing heaps of monounsaturated fats (the good fats) and lots of omega 3’s.
There you have it. Canola oil is in everything, since it is very inexpensive to produce, so be sure to read your labels.
Other unhealthy oils/fats:
Corn oil
Margarine
Shortening
Vegetable oil
Healthy oils to use:
Coconut oil-my number one choice! (More on this one below)
Olive oil– Love it! Use it in low temperature cooking, preferably in salad dressings etc. It changes it molecular structure when heated to high temperatures.
Grape seed oil– this oil is good for high heat, contains vitamin C, E and beta- carotene (a.k.a. antioxidants!), it is heart healthy, great for your skin and loaded with omega 6 fatty acid.
Remember with the oils they should always be organic (no yucky pesticides), cold pressed (which means the first squeeze) and stored in a dark glass bottle to keep from turning rancid.
Coconut oil:
I could talk for DAYS about coconut oil. I’m coo-koo for coconut oil! I use it on my face and body daily, condition my hair with it periodically, put it in my smoothies and loads of recipes, apply it to scrapes and cuts, spread it on my toast with nutritional yeast in place of butter and pop my popcorn in it!
Here are a few facts on the beautiful tropical coconut oil:
– Anti-bacterial, antiviral, anti-parasitic, antifungal
– Loaded with Vitamin E
– Contains lauric acid, which is a component found in mother’s milk
– Contains medium chain fatty acids which go directly to the liver and turn straight into energy, increasing metabolism
– Great hair conditioner
– Beneficial to your heart
– Improves your digestive system
– Strengthens your immune system
– Speeds up the healing on bruises, cuts and infections
– This is just the tip of the iceberg of the benefits of coconut oil!
Add coconut oil into your life anyway you can!
